White wines

The Coteaux du Layon (« Appellation of Protected Origin ») are exclusively produced from the Chenin grapes, sometimes known as Pineau de la Loire. Chenin white wines have been produced in Anjou for centuries (the first citations go back to the seventh century). This grape can produce either dry white (under the appellation Anjou) as well as sweet ones.

Concerning the sweet wines, Coteaux du Layon, the harvest is hand-picked, late, by several sortings of over-ripened grapes, affected by noble rot. It is caused by a mushroom, the botrytis cinerea, which allows the grapes skin to get thinner and porous under certain conditions of humidity and temperature. A part of the water contained in the grape will evaporate therefore creating a natural high concentration in sugar, with low yield (35hl/ha max). These condititions are met in the Layon valley, a 70 kilometers long tributary of the Loire, with south south-west oriented slopes, mainly shale soils, sometimes gravel-based and sand soils like in Rablay.

Depending on the year and sorting of grapes, we produce up to four different Coteaux du Layon 'cuvées'. All those wines can age for more than 20 years but are also enjoyable young.
